We get it. You look at the whiteboard or screen, and it looks like the workout was written in a different language.
When you’re new to CrossFit, acronyms like AMRAP and EMOM sound like complete gibberish. To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of common CrossFit terms with their definitions.
WOD
WOD stands for “Workout Of the Day.” You’ll find that most CrossFit WODs are structured similarly. The workout begins with a group warm-up. (If you’re sweating by the end of the warm-up, don’t worry. That’s pretty normal.) Then you’ll have either a skill or strength component. Next up is the main part of the daily workout that the whole class will start together. And at the end, a cool down with stretching and mobility work.
Rx or Rx’d
Rx is shorthand for “as prescribed.” If you do the WOD as Rx’d, it means that you used the prescribed weight (for either men or women), as well as the programmed movements, sets, and reps. However, scaling and modifications to the prescribed WOD are always an option.
AMRAP
An AMRAP is a workout programming structure that stands for “As Many Reps (or Rounds) As Possible.” In this type of WOD, you have a set timeframe, like 12 minutes. Your goal is to complete as many reps or rounds as possible of a given set of movements in those 12 minutes.
For Time
“For time” means that your goal is to complete a given set of movements as quickly as possible.
EMOM
EMOM is short for “Every Minute On the Minute.” For this type of workout, you’ll have a group of movements that you’ll complete at the top of every minute.
After a few weeks of CrossFit, you’ll get used to the terminology and will be deciphering workouts like a pro. And if you’re ever unsure what something means, don’t hesitate to ask your coach for clarification.
