How do you feel about exercise? Is it something that reminds you of when you were a kid, and you never looked forward to gym class? Do you find yourself saying that you “have” to go work out?
You’re not alone. But it is possible to reframe your thoughts around your workouts and make your experience more enjoyable.
Here are three ways to create a positive mindset about working out:
1. Find something you enjoy.
Exercise should make you feel good. Sure, there will be tough moments where you’re pushing through the last few reps of a workout or shooting for a new PR in a lift. But in the end, exercise should not feel like a form of torture. It should make you feel good. And one way to accomplish this is by finding activities that you enjoy. If you always have to psych yourself up to put on your running shoes, then it’s worth it to explore other workout options.
2. Be consistent but flexible.
Even on the days you don’t feel like working out, you can still approach fitness with a positive mindset. There will be days that you need to suck it up and do the workout that you had planned on. But sticking to this rigid approach all the time can take its toll on your motivation and your mindset. Rather than rigidly following a training program with no room for modifications, give yourself some wiggle room. Make small adjustments to your workout, and remember that working out for even ten minutes is better than working out for zero minutes.
3. Track your progress.
Some days you wake up and wonder, what’s the point? Am I even making any progress? How do you know if your efforts are getting results? Creating a workout log, either a paper or digital version, allows you to track your progress. When you have a visual representation of all the work you’ve put into accomplishing your fitness goals, it can boost your motivation and contribute to a positive mindset.
