What does it mean to be coachable, and why is it important? Being coachable means that you’re willing to listen and accept feedback at the gym with an open mind. It’s important because you increase your chances of achieving your goals and getting results when you do this.
Here are a few suggestions on how to become more coachable at the gym:
1. Listen and learn.
If you walk into the gym and assume that you already have all the answers, then you might be better off working out on your own. On the other hand, an approach where you’re willing to listen to your coaches and learn something new can take your training to a new level. When you assume that you’ve got everything all figured out, you’re limiting yourself and preventing future growth. Be willing to listen and learn.
2. Put your ego aside.
When you work out with others, you benefit from accountability, support, and a sense of community. However, it can be a challenge not to compare yourself to others. You might even hold yourself back because you’re afraid of making a mistake in front of others. Rather than taking your cues from those around you, use your coach’s instruction to guide what you do or don’t do in the gym. Put your ego and comparison aside and focus on your own path of improvement.
3. Keep an open mind.
Accepting feedback from your coach and acting on it is one of the best ways to get results. But sometimes, it’s tough to take feedback, especially if you’re not used to getting it. Remember that there is a difference between criticism and feedback. Your coaches and instructors are not attacking you but trying to guide and help you. Show up with an open mind, and don’t take any feedback personally.
