With so many gym options available, how do you decide where to work out? What’s going to be the best option for you?
First, not all CrossFit gyms are the same. So if you’re thinking that CrossFit isn’t for you because you didn’t like the gym, it’s worth looking into other locations. You might have better luck with a different CrossFit.
Here are a few suggestions on how to choose the right CrossFit gym for you:
1. Get a tour of the gym.
Stopping in to check out a facility gives you a feel for the space and can even help you feel less intimidated when you’re just getting started. Rather than showing up for a workout, you’re just there to check out the gym. As you take a look around, ask about class sizes and equipment. Make sure that the gym and the equipment look clean and well taken care of. Even pop into the bathrooms and make sure those are clean and well taken care of, as well.
2. Meet the coaches and staff.
You can “meet” a gym’s coaches online and read through staff profiles. You’ll get information on experience and certifications. But it’s not a bad idea to meet a few coaches in person. You’ll get a feel for a gym’s coaching style and who you’d be working with.
3. Check out the community.
Because you have so many gym options, sometimes the biggest deciding factor will come down to the people and community. CrossFit is a great way to meet people who share similar interests as yours. Many gyms offer events outside of the regular weekly class schedule so you can all get to know each other better.
4. Beware of red flags.
Have you ever walked into a gym and just knew right away that it wasn’t for you? Beware of some red flags that may be contributing to this weird vibe. You shouldn’t feel pressured to sign up by a salesperson. At the same time, be wary if you see various multi-level marketing products on display (like Herbalife) or the latest and greatest “fat-burning” supplement.
5. Learn about the different program options.
Make sure that the gym offers programs that will help you reach your personal goals. If you’re new to CrossFit, ask if the gym provides a Fundamentals option for beginners. If you know you’re interested in personal training either now or in the future, then find out if the gym offers any type of private instruction. Again, speak with a coach to find out what will work best for you.
The best way to find out if a gym is a good fit for you is to try it out. Cannon Fitness and Performance in Houston offers a free trial workout, and we’d love for you to come and see what we’re all about.
